DIY: Make Your Own Envelopes & Letter Sets

I participated in a “repurposed letterset” swap on Swap-bot. You take something like an atlas, calendar, magazine pages, or an old book to create a handmade letterset.

I took one of my envelopes that I really like the design of and tore it apart to use as a template.

Then I chose these thrifted quilting books, since well, I will never quilt, haha! I used the covers as the envelopes.

Then I traced the template and cut it out.

Hopefully, knowing where to fold is straight forward.

Tip: Line up a ruler to each edge and then fold it across the ruler. Don’t put the ruler right over where you need to fold though, put it down just a bit, so it looks like you’re going to overshoot the fold. It will make your corners line up much better.

Obviously, a bone folder would work perfectly if I owned one.

Then glue it. I like to glue the bottom on top of the sides – I think it looks nicer than the left/right side being on top, but it’s up to you.

Tip: You can get what’s called glue runner or tape runner at craft stores and it works very well for this.

Finally, I took two random pages from the book, ones that had the most blank spots on them, to use as the pages to write on.

Final letter set!

A few other envelopes I’ve made!

If you’ve made it this far through my torturous awesome first tutorial, I made up an envelope template for you to download, so it will be easier for you to make your own envelopes. You can print it and either trace it on other paper or just use it for your envelope.

Water color drawing

My first real person drawing ever! I used Anna Denise’s tutorial to do it.

I colored it with water color pencils first, then put the water on it, so the first picture is colored pencils, second water color. This is also my first attempt at using water color pencils.

There’s a lot I don’t like about it (arms) and a lot I like, but I don’t think it’s too bad for the first attempt, do you?

Mail Art

I’m doing a mail art swap on Swap-bot, and you’re supposed to umm, “mail art” the mail, haha, and then send something small, but fun along with it. I still have a second one to do, but here’s my first.

Year in Review

In early 2010, I started my blog completely over, eventually moving it from fizleglitz.com to . I didn’t know if I could stick with a blog that didn’t talk about politics and religion or have stream of conscious-type writing, since I spent the previous 7-8 years on various blog sites writing just like that.

But, it’s been fantastic and freeing. I miss the old, but it was time for something new and I’m glad I made the jump. I no longer consider this place my “diary”, but rather a “record of projects”, which really represents my ENTP self, haha.

It’s been a year of vintage, snail mail, art and lots of photos! Here are some of the more interesting things happening around here:

1.) Regular features: Snail Mail Monday, Postcard Thursday & Quick Tips.
2.) Vintage goodies.
2.) SMAIP project: Send Me An Instant Photo!
4.) Looking for a penpal? My address is over on the right hand side of the blog. ——–>
3.) My “firsts” list. This is a list of things I’ve done or experienced for the first time in my life. I think it’s much more fun than resolutions. I’m sure there are things missing, but this is what I have for 2010..

went to smithsonian, saw hope diamond, saw women joining trinitarian third order, man digging through trashcan for food, march for life, three snow storms [snowpocalypse!], used a [mini diana] toy camera, dyed hair pink, became a skywarn spotter, zentangle, painted on canvas, circle journal, art journal, art journal class, wrote letters/had penpals, postcrossing, finished a painting, painted picture frames, fish market, made sushi, got a patio set, dierks bentley concert, went to a club in baltimore, ate chicken feet, summer camp class, signed up to sell mark., went tubing (water), got an instax mini, got a vintage sewing machine, pictures on railroad tracks, conquered fabric stores, went to a craft show, made something for somebody else/participated in a swap, embroidered, traced my feet in chalk, made cupcakes, drawing class, sewing class/learning to sew, got an electric typewriter, decorated a room in a way i like, created a craft space, buckcherry/flyleaf concert, got new record of a current band, went to the ER, went to Colorado, Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods, solved a 4×4 rubik’s cube, got a DSLR, start a camera collection

I’m ready for another year of new experiences! Happy New Year!

Postcard Thursday

I like this one because it’s from 1989 and it’s close to where I live now.

Fountain and Theatre
in the new Charles Center
Baltimore, Maryland

The Jacob France Memorial Fountain with its constantly change water display and night illumination, the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre with its year-round schedule of legitimate theatre and other live productions, and the Sun Life Building (right) are some of the outstanding components in Baltimore’s great downtown redevelopment.

Dear Margie,
I hope everything is o.k. there. My sisters and I always enjoy each others’ company. Will see you soon!
Love,
Doris
