sewing machine & coin purse

i found this old sewing machine when i went up to PA. i haven’t figured out how to thread it yet, though i did find something last night that might help, but i haven’t tried it yet. as far as i can tell though, it’s going to work and the case was ick but the machine looks great. it was my mom’s, but i have no idea where it initially came from – don’t know if it was in the family or anything. it’s a sears & roebuck commander, model 605.

and this past weekend, we went to a few yard sales and i got this machine for $15. i’ve never owned a sewing machine before, i don’t know how to use them (we learned in school but i don’t remember at all) and really, i don’t know how to sew at all. but, i decided it’s time to learn & so today i figured out how to thread it & i used it!

i had gotten some small squares of fabric for art journaling at walmart so i decided i’d cut out a chunk and make it into a little coin purse/wallet thingy. and i have a million buttons, so..

i have NO idea what i’m doing! lol i didn’t measure anything, i didn’t cut straight, the fabric is super thin & amazingly i didn’t break the machine! but hey, it was fun!

down to my really bad hand stitching! haha! [and seriously, i was trying HARD here!! lol]

  • You’ll get the hang of sewing. Just keep trying and you’ll be doing great in no time. There’s loads of sewing tutorials online. I’d also encourage you to seek out a local quilting shop and go watch the ladies there working on their machines. You can pick up a lot of tips from them, more often than not completely free of charge.

  • oooh. button hole. I’m impressed. I’ve never tried that before.

  • i’m very impressed. i know how hard you worked on that (and how long!) yay lauren!!

  • How neat, my MIL has that exact same machine – and it’s currently in my position (my MIL is awesome). It’s a great machine. Did yours come with all the parts? Because it has an automatic buttonhole function that is likely much easier than handstitching. 😉

  • Err…possession. Not position. 😛

@Cynthia It has the buttonhole presser foot thinger haha, i had to look it up to figure out what it was, but I don’t know how to use it. i think it has all the parts & it has the manual (that’s how i figured out how to turn it on and thread it, lol) This is the first time I’ve ever used a sewing machine, i don’t even know how to like.. seal? the stiches.. (haha, keep it from unraveling, no idea what it’s called)

  • Lauren, it’s called locking the stitches. The way you do that it by first make a couple stitches forward (normally) and the hold down your reverse button for a couple stitches. When you let go of the reverse, it’ll stitch forward again and your stitches won’t come undone. Do this at the beginning and end of every lines of stitches.

@Melody, I actually tried that, but it really bunched up really bad and I ended up having to cut out of it. Am I doing something or is there something wrong with the machine?

  • Cute! I love the fabric! So great!
