on colourguard

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

My thirteen year old sister called me a few hours ago.

She wanted to know my opinion on the colourguard in a marching band, since I was in the marching band in high school. She is in middle school currently, and plays the clarinet in concert band. She is curious about trying out for colourguard, and potentially doing colourguard in high school, instead of marching with her clarinet.

More importantly, she wanted to know if colourguard members are just “fat girls in spandex”.

I cannot lie. I had to say yes.

right.

I don’t know if this is good or bad. The other day I bought a book, and I realised I already owned it. Today, I’m browsing through Bookmooch and marking some books that I would like to get. However, I cannot remember if I have any of them or not.

I am thinking about turning my old blog into a book blog. I don’t much care for doing book reviews, but I do love to ramble on and on about book-related things. Okay, I just like to ramble.

I just realised that my 25th birthday is coming up in two months and five days. I am almost a quarter of a century old… I think I’m going through a mid-life crisis or something here. I must have a Harley.

And, I know I’m deranged and all, but I cannot figure out, for the life of me, how to get out of the left side of the bed. I do, indeed, have mad spatial skillz.

My husband will sleep through anything– I was making so much noise the other night, that I am now convinced that if we are ever burglarised, I will have to use my mad ninja skillz to fight them off.

But, I have found my secret weapon– not against the evil burglars (I mean, hello, ninja) but against my sleepy husband. When I put my icey cold fingers on him, he jumps and yells, “oh geez”, while still sleeping. It’s a blast to do, I mean, of course, in the name of science, since he’s a bit of an experiment, for umm, research purposes, and uh never, ever annoyance purposes or anything like that. Right.

Yes, I do have as many mad skillz as this entry suggests.

korean wedding ducks

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

My husband’s boss went to Korea a few weeks ago to take care of something work related and he brought us back a wedding gift– Korean wedding ducks.

They are a tradition for newly married couples in Korea. They are a symbol of faithfulness– of a long and happy marriage. One duck represents the wife and one the husband. After the wedding, they are placed somewhere in the couple’s house. Their position, placed by either spouse at any given time, tells of the couple’s marital state. Face to face means the relationship is good; tail to tail means there is something wrong. A couple is never to go to bed with the ducks tail to tail.

This was my favourite wedding present, and perhaps the neatest gift I have ever received.

communication 101: keep your clothes on

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

My husband and I are a part of a mentoring program at our church. It’s in guinea pig stage, and we were asked to participate in the first set of couples. We’re paired with an older married couple, and we’re going to be mentored by them– or rather, we’re mentoring each other in some ways.

The older couple set up a study for all four of us to do together, from a book called Love Talk by Dr. Les and Leslie Parrott. There is a main book and then one workbook for each the husband and the wife. The book is about learning communicate in a relationship or marriage, and is designed to supposedly relate to anyone in a relationship, no matter what the stage. I tend to differ on this– I don’t think we’re yet ready for it, not because we are perfect and know how to communicate, but because we’ve simply not had the time to develop poor habits and the knowledge of knowing exactly what they are. Anyway, I digress.

So, my husband and I are sitting in bed together, reading chapter one from this book and filling out the workbooks. We’re under the blankets, in deep conversation, sorting everything out — writing goals and taking assessments of our skills. To be clear, we’re completely into this book, when suddenly, in the middle of a sentence, he gets up out of bed, and takes off his pants.

I watch, blinking.

He crawls back into bed.

Flabbergasted, I say, “Why did you just take off your pants?”

He replies, “Oh, because I’m getting ready for bed.”

“We’re not done; I was in the middle of a sentence.”

He laughs. “It seemed like the thing to do. I saw the laptop needed to be plugged in, and thought I would quickly get up and plug it in or put it away for the night, then I realised I wasn’t in my pajamas yet, so I started getting ready for bed, hence taking off my pants. Then I decided I was just going to let the laptop go for the night.”

Frustrated, I only blink.

Perhaps we are in need of better communication skills than I thought.

B07 #27: Went for a Walk

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Since Estella wrote the last entry for me, I was able to have some time to go for a walk. So, thank you, Estella! My husband finished his entry early, and we went a few blocks and back around the alley.

I haven’t had many chances to see my neighbourhood yet. It’s been so hot and I just can’t bring myself to walk around outside too much. But, for some reason our neighbourhood does not look like the rest of our town. Actually, I like it a lot. It is a lot less run-down, and everyone has a lot of trees and plants in their frontyard.

But, perhaps I should get out a little bit more. We were walking up the alley and I do a double take at our house– there are trees missing in the backyard! Literally, trees missing. So, we look closer and there are several other plants missing, and a lot of the foliage has been cut out. We have a small pond back there, and there was a tree hanging over it. Now it is completely gone. What in the world?

We had been keeping up with the foliage as best as possible, but neither one of us had ever had a yard like this before and it was too much work. A few weeks ago, we cut down a lot of limbs, and we put them in our carport. The city sent us a citation saying we needed to remove them or go to municipal court. Apparently, the landlord received the same citation, and decided the city meant the entire yard was unkempt.(another reading word)

Hey, I’m not complaining here. It was really too much for us. I just think it’s hysterical that the landlord never bothered to tell us it was being done, and we never even noticed. I think it happened today, but I never heard a thing. For heaven’s sakes, there were trees cut down, in our own backyard. I totally blame my lack of perception on the Blogathon!

Check out Librarything.com. It’s a book cataloging site. I only have 54 of my books listed there, but my catalog is here, if you are interested.

B07 #18: Storms

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

So, it’s getting dark in here, and I look outside. The entire sky is almost pitch black. Weather.com says we have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Now, in the midwest, this usually means tornados as well, but since it is toward the end of tornado season, I’m not very worried. However, it does mean damaging wind, hail, and lots of lightning– all with me on my computer.

This also means there is a pretty decent chance that the power will go out, or a cable line will go down, or something else that will affect the Blogathon.

I’m really hoping the power doesn’t go out. I have no other method of getting on here and updating. My phone is definitely not up to it. I pretty much would be at a loss as to what to do.

So, here’s to the weather cooperating…
