army enlists anthropologists

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I happen to come across this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7042090.stm.

I’m not much for discussing articles in depth, but I think it’s an excellent concept, very smart. I’m not sure why it hasn’t been done or proposed (or even if it has) sooner. I find it a shame that more people are not willing to use their knowledge base because of the mandatory weapons training.

Some anthropologists have developed a pledge of non-participation. Actually, I very much respect that, but I find myself torn between the benefits of teaching soldiers about cultural groups and the respect of non-disturbance in analysing other cultures.

And then the rest of me says, doesn’t this sound awfully similar to Stargate’s SG-1 team?
