grumble

The diary site I usually frequent is down, which is no surprise, because it seems more and more frequent lately. So, I guess I’ll write in here, for once. haha. The reason I went to this particular site from another site, five-ish years ago, was because the other site went down all the time. The reason I made this website is because this site is evil, that and I wanted my own part of the web. I’m vain that way. It’s the diary site life, baby. I blogged before bloggin’ was cool.

It’s too bad I don’t have any readers. hehe

Let’s see.. what is happening in the life of Lauren? Well, I’m reading a book. Ok, I’m always reading a book. I’m reading The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahari. I read her collection of short stories last year and enjoyed them a lot, and well, she’s literary and famous, so of course I must read it. So, far, so good.

I’m also reading A fractured mind : my life with multiple personality disorder by Robert Oxnam. Also, so far so good. It seems comparative to the two other DID books I’ve liked– Switching Time by Dr. Richard Baer, and First Person Plural: My Life as a Multiple by Dr. Cameron West. The former is from a psychologist’s perspective and the latter is from the patient’s perspective, however, he gets a doctorate later in life.

And, finally, I’m reading I am a Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter, which I’ve been wanting to read for a long time. I have three of his other books, but I don’t have this one, but I finally sucked it up and took it out of the library. I am such a geek.

I’m really hoping these turn out to be positive experiences, because my book list this year has essentially, well, sucked. I have been disappointed with almost everything lately, and I put down way more books than I end up finishing. I have a feeling I won’t make 100 books again this year, because of the time wasted on books I end up giving up on. John Grisham’s new book is terribly boring. Jodi Picoult’s new book is horrific and offensive. Sophie Kinsella’s is doable, but not memorable. Life on the Refrigerator Door was so quick and pointless that I didn’t get the hype. I enjoyed Beverly Lewis’s new book, but that’s a quick pleasure read, hardly anything memorable. Then there is a dozen not even worth mentioning.

There are a few books I have actually enjoyed– Switching Time, The Stolen Child by Keith Donahue, Teach Me by R.A. Nelson, Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen, and The Heroines by Eileen Favorite. The Stolen Child is now one of my all-time favourites, and I don’t even like fantasy. (Though, it’s about as much fantasy as Time Traveler’s Wife is Sci-fi. Yeah, it only gets by on mere technicalities.)

I also really enjoyed The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers, which really surprised me because I’ve always categorised her as old lady Christian fiction. I always did the same with Lori Wick, as well, but years ago, she surprised me with The Princess, which was really captivating.

Well, anyway, I guess that’s all I’m going to ramble on about for now.

I’m sorry you haven’t been able to finish a lot of books so far this year. That happened to me last year. I’d find a book that I thought I ‘loved’, only to find out later that I couldn’t bare to read it anymore. Hopefully you’ll get on a good reading kick again.

I love Francine Rivers books, even though they are a bit old ladyish. I’ve never finished a Lori Wick book cause it was too old ladyish for me. Maybe I should try “The Princess” sometime…..
