singular “they”

This cracked me up. I apologise ahead of time for my ability to get easily amused, but here goes.

Everyone knows [or rather should] that using the singular form of “they” is not ‘appropriate’ in the English language. For example, the sentence, “Everyone loves their home,’ would be better written as, “Everyone loves his home.” (or in place of “his”: “her” or “his/her” if you want to go PC crazy on everyone) This is how I was taught, though more and more, it’s accepted to use “they” as though it is singular and all encompassing.

But, this article explores, tongue-in-cheek, the idea that the King James Bible uses the “singular they”.

Now, I don’t want to steal this brilliance from the authour of that blog, so go see it for yourself. Read the first half or so– oh, about up to the coffee cup– and that should get you laughing. No need to read further unless you’re a bit of a nerd and are actually interested. (like me)

P.S. While you’re at it, go check out this blog posting for a crack at leekspeak and Shakespeare.
